Things went disastrously wrong. It was a real mess. We tried to {compensate|handle the situation, but it was like trying to here stop a tsunami with a spoon. We're still picking up the debris and feeling the sting of this unmitigated catastrophe.

This crisis has spiraled out of control. It's a total fiasco. We've tried anything to fix it, but nothing seems to be effective. At this point, it feels like we're toast. Frankly, I don't know what else to do. This is a train wreck of epic proportions.
This is So Bad, It's Funny (Not Really)
Sometimes you stumble upon situations so horrifically bad that you can't help but laugh. It's like your brain tries to process the sheer level of chaos and just gives up, opting for a weak, desperate giggle as a coping strategy.
But then, you realize that it's not really funny. It's just plain horrifyingly awful. And the laughter you were experiencing morphs into a groan.
Ultimately, you are left with a sense of utter perplexity. You start ruminating about the meaning of it all. Was this intended to be funny?
Or were we just simply unfortunate enough to witness this spectacle unfold?
Catastrophe of Epic Proportions
The earthquake struck with devastating force, consuming entire villages in its sweep. Buildings collapsed like fragile toys, and the screams that erupted was deafening. Thousands were buried beneath wreckage, their fate precarious. The scale of the disaster was unprecedented, leaving survivors to grapple a future forever changed.
Rescue efforts sprang into action, struggling against time and treacherous conditions to rescue those still trapped. The nations watched in horror as the full magnitude of the disaster became apparent, offering support to the affected population.
Worst Day Ever
It all started with my case of bedhead hair. I couldn't do it to look presentable. As I was dashing out the door, I stumbled and spilled all over my new shoes. To make matters worse, I was completely behind schedule for work.
I in a state of utter panic. My {boss|friend|was absolutely furious. I attempted to explain, but it was a hopeless situation.
The rest of the day was absolutely horrendous. Everything. I couldn'tfocus.
By the time I got home, I was utterly defeated. This day, this terrible day will be forever remembered as an epic fail.

It all started out badly with a simple mishap/incident/screw-up. But then it went from bad to absolutely terrible. A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just want to run away and hide.
